Classroom management is an aspect of education that is
often used as a major concern by the prospective teachers, new teachers, and
even teachers who are experienced. Because prospective teachers, new teachers,
and teachers who have experienced desirous that the learners can learn
optimally. In terms of teachers capable of delivering the materials and
acceptable by learners well.
Professional teacher one character is a teacher who is
able to manage a class well. The creation of a comfortable class is a study of
classroom management. Therefore classroom management is a series of teacher
behavior in its efforts to create and maintain classroom conditions that allow
students to learn well.
In a class all aspects of learning to meet and
proceed, with all his teachers, pupils with all the background and potential,
the curriculum with all its components, with any method approach, with all the
media devices, with all sources of learning materials to meet and interact in
the classroom.
Classroom management is needed because from day to day
and even from time to time the behavior and actions of students are always
changing. Today students can learn and quiet, but not necessarily tomorrow.
Yesterday happened healthy competition in the group, otherwise the future it
may be less healthy competition. Class is always dynamic in the form of the
behavior, actions, attitudes, mental, and emotional students.
I was surprised when reading a literature entitled
"The Classroom Checkup: An Assessment/Intervention Tool for Improving
Classroom Management", the scientific work Wendy M. Reinke (John Hopkins
University, Bloomberg School of Public Health). Reinke stated that
"Classroom with poor produce negative student behavior management
outcomes". The statement is supported by other statements, that "Poor
classroom management place student, at risk of current and future behavior
problems" (Aber, Jones, Brown, Chaudy, and Samples, 1998; Kellam, Ling,
Merisca, Brown, and Lalongo, 1998; Lalongo, Poduska, Werthamer, and Kellam,
2001).
When teaching, classroom management is very important
factor to help teachers can teach and students can learn. Apparently there are
other things more important than learning objectives can be achieved, namely to
help students have a positive attitude and internalize the life (discipline,
tolerance, hard work, confidence, social sensitivity and responsibility) to
equip them for the future.
- Does your class have the rules to be followed you and the students?
- Musty rewards and consequences that must be accepted, if you and the student violating class rules that have been agreed?
- Rule class as what you do in order to carry out a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning in the classroom?
Steven G. Little
and Angeleque Akin-Little (The University of The Pacific) imposes limits how to
make regulations for the better class. In the study, Psychology's Contribution
to Education: Effective Classroom Management (2010), stated that there are
several characteristics of good rules categorized to set up as a classroom
rules, namely:
- Keep the number of rules to a Minimum – about five rules for each classroom,
- Keep the wording of rules Simple – picture or icon depicting the rules help the understanding of younger student,
- Have the rules logically represent the Basic Expectation for a student’s behavior in the classroom,
- Keep the wording Positive if possible. Most rules can be stated in a positive manner, some rules cannot. However, the majority of classroom rules should be positive,
- Make the rules Specific. The more ambiguous (i.e. open to several interpretation) the rules are, the more difficult they are to understand. Don’t give any loopholes.
- Make the rules describe behavior that is Observable. The behavior must be observable so that an unequivocal decision can be made as to whether the rule has been followed,
- Make sure the rules describe behavior that is Measurable. That is, behavior must be able to be counted and quantified in someway for monitoring purpose,
- Publicly Post the rules in a prominent place in the classroom (e.g. in the front of the classroom, near the door). The lettering should be large and block printed,
- Tie following the rules Consequences. Spell out what happens positively if student follow the rules, and what they lose if do not follow the rules,
- Always include a Compliance Rules. You get the behavior that are posted in the rules. If you want to improve compliance in the classroom, include a rules such as “Do what your teacher says immediately”.
Here are some
examples of rules that can be applied in the classroom that meets the minimum
criteria, simple, and positive. Fit for use as a reference discipline in
classroom situations, including:
1. Bring a book
and a pencil into the classroom,
2. Put your
hands, and please speak if it has been welcome by the teachers,
3. Please ask if
you do not understand the subject matter.
